BREW GUIDE

The French Press is a quick and straightforward brew method that yields a rich full bodied and flavorful cup of coffee. Here’s a step-by-step guide to brewing delicious coffee using a French Press.

Brew Method: Emmersion
Grind Setting: Course
Estimated Time: 6 min.

STEPS

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

The French Press: Available in different sizes, below are suggested recipes that scales with the various size options:

  • 3 cup French press: 19 grams coffee and 300ml water
  •  cup French press, 38 grams coffee and 600ml water
  • 8 cup French press, 53 grams coffee and 850ml water
  • 12 cup French press, 88 grams coffee and 1.4 litres water

Coffee Beans: Select freshly roasted coffee beans and grind them to a coarse consistency just before brewing. For the best results, use a coarse grind, as a finer grind may cause challenges during pressing and lead to coffee grounds in the final brew.

Hot Water: Heat water to about 93°C for best results.
Timer: A timer will help you keep track of the brewing time.
Spoon: To stir coffee during the brewing process.

Step 2: Preheat the French Press
Pour some hot water into the French Press to preheat it. Swirl the water around and then discard it.

Step 3: Add Coffee Grounds
Add the coarsely ground coffee into the preheated French Press. Refer to recipes in Step 1 as a starting point. You can adjust the ratio to your taste preference, if you like your coffee stronger add more coffee or if you prefer it weaker use less coffee.

Step 4: Bloom the Coffee
Pour a small amount of hot water (about double the weight of the coffee) evenly over the coffee grounds and give it a gentle swirl or stir. Allow it to “bloom” for about 30 seconds helps release the coffee’s aroma and flavour.

Step 5: Pour the Remaining Water
Slowly pour the rest of the hot water over the coffee grounds, ensuring they are fully saturated.

Step 6: Stir
Use a spoon to gently stir the coffee-water mixture, making sure all the coffee grounds are fully immersed in water.

Step 7: Place the Lid and Plunger
Put the lid with the plunger on top of the French Press but do not press down yet. Let the coffee steep for about 3-4 minutes.

Step 8: Press the Plunger
After the steeping time, slowly and steadily press the plunger down to separate the coffee grounds from the brewed coffee.

Step 9: Pour and Serve
Pour the freshly brewed coffee into your cup and enjoy. If you’re not going to drink it immediately, consider transferring the remaining coffee to a thermal carafe to keep it hot and fresh.

Step 10: Clean Up
Clean the French Press thoroughly after each use. Disassemble the plunger and wash all the parts with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and let them dry completely before reassembling.

Remember to experiment with the coffee-to-water ratios and fine tune your grind setting to find your perfect brewing recipe – Happy brewing!
