It’s 2025, and by now, we all know ordering a regular latte with cow’s milk for some almost feels… vintage.
Oat milk, almond milk, soy milk, macadamia milk (talk about spoiled for choice), have taken over coffee shops everywhere. Alternative milk hasn’t become just another trend, it’s turned into a whole movement. But along with the rise of plant-based milks come a few misconceptions that need to be cleared up. So let’s spill the milk on what’s fact and what’s fiction.
Is Alternative really better than dairy?
Not necessarily! People have the misconception that swapping dairy for plant-based options makes them healthier, but it really depends on what you’re drinking. Some alternative milks are packed with added sugars, oils, and gums to improve texture and taste. Besides, dairy milk is naturally rich in protein, calcium, and vitamins, whereas some plant-based milks need to be fortified with these nutrients. That being said, always check labels to ensure you know what you’re putting in your body!
Do all alternatives taste the same?
Not at all, every milk alternative has a different flavor and texture. Oat milk tends to be creamy and naturally sweet, making it a favorite for baristas, while almond milk can be a little watery and nutty. Soy milk on the other hand is super creamy but comes with a distinct beany taste. So, if you tried one and hated it, don’t write them all off just yet.
Alternative Milk Is Just for Vegans & the Lactose-Intolerant
Not at all! Plenty of people choose non-dairy milk for reasons beyond diet restrictions. Some do it for sustainability (oat milk, for example, has a much lower environmental impact than dairy). Others just prefer the taste or texture in their coffee. Whatever the reason, alternative milks are for everyone—no labels required.
In the end, whether you’re sipping on a dairy or plant-based latte, the choice ultimately comes down to personal preference, and what works best for your body and lifestyle. While alternative milks continue to rise in popularity for their variety, taste, and environmental benefits, it’s important to be aware of what’s actually in your drink. Read labels, experiment with different types, and enjoy the wide array of options available. The milk debate isn’t just about what’s “better” it’s about finding what works best for you.
Cheers to more delicious choices in your cup!
